3-Alarmer Dumps the House

January 15th, 2009

At around 1726 hours, while the winter freeze was in full force, Adams County 911 began receiving numerous calls for a building fire on York Rd. The pre-alert was dropped for Box 13-6, Berwick Township, to Flooring Outlaw, 6355 York Rd., for a commercial building fire. Chief 13 (Rabine) responded and requested second alarm immediately which brought the "The Alley Cat - Quint 29," Engine 29, Rescue 29, Tanker 29, Service 29, and 29A from the Holy City to "The Ox." The Engine/Tanker had a mechanical problem and did not respond but was later running and remained staffed throughout the evening.

The Quint arrived and was advised to set-up on the "Charlie" side. After leaving a "quint rub" on a tree the crew pulled a 1"3/4 line to protect the exposure, while the stick was raised. Tanker 29 arrived and established water supply while the engine dropped about 1000 feet of 5" and pulled a pre-connect line and the Rescue also went to the rear. The ladder pipe was put into service and flowed several thousand gallons of water along with Truck 13. Several departments from Adams and York Counties operated at what ended up being a 3-Alarm Fire. Upon rolling hose and attempting to de-ice equipment, the water thawed the ground out and the Quint was later pulled out courtesy of Lady & Taylor Towing and returned at 2252. SAVES had over 30 personnel for the incident.

Special thanks to the Gettysburg Fire Dept. for covering "The Holy City" with Quint 1 during the fire. More photos can be found at the link.
